What are the basics?
Bed bugs are generally found in close proximity to beds, this does not mean they cannot be in other locations. That is because bed bugs need the blood of warm-blooded animals to survive and thrive.
Do bed bugs bite?
Yes, bed bugs primarily feed on humans while we sleep. Bed bugs are inherently nocturnal and will be active during the night. The bite is painless and bed bugs will generally feed for about 10 minutes.
Where do I look?
Bed bugs will nest close by where the host spends most of their time sitting or lying down. If in the bedroom, the top places to look is the box springs, headboards, bed frames, the border and threading of your mattress, etc. While bedrooms are a hot spot, bed bugs will also nest in couches, recliners, office chairs, and anywhere else humans sit and spend extended periods of time. For example, sitting in public areas for long periods of time makes you a target if bed bugs are present there.
How do I know if I have bed bugs?
Bed bugs are professionals at hide-and-seek, but they also leave clues behind indicating their presence.
• Bed bug skins or exoskeletons they leave behind.
• Fecal stains on your mattress or furniture, which appear as black dots.
• Blood stains on your sheets or clothing.
How long do bed bugs live?
Adult bed bugs can usually survive about 5 months without eating. Eggs have been a debated point by scientists, but with current data, it is estimated eggs will hatch in around 10 days in a warm environment.
