There are few things that are more annoying than having bugs in your home, let alone roaches. They come with a vengeance and refuse to leave. So, if you do have roaches in your home, how can you help get rid of them before calling a pest professional? Here is everything you need to know to help rid your home of these pests.

What Invites Cockroaches to Your Home

Pests of all sorts – whether it’s bed bugs, carpenter ants, or roaches – have one thing in common – they are all in search of food in easy to access areas. Roaches specifically are attracted to:

  • dirty dishes

  • garbage

  • crumbs on the counters or on the floor

  • Moisture

  • Pet food

How Cockroaches Enter Your Home

There could be a buffet of goodies for the roaches in your home, but the little guys have to get in there somehow, right? The most common way roaches can enter your home is by getting a ride home with you from the store or on other items from outside sources.

How You Can Help Get Rid of Cockroaches

1. Thoroughly Clean Your Home

This may seem like the most obvious step, but this is the most important step. The roaches are in your home because there is a source of food. Once you eliminate this source and keep it away, It will be much easier to get them out. Make sure to do the following:

  • Wash and put away your dishes after each meal

  • Crumbs and spills need to be cleaned immediately

  • Wash your stovetop regularly to remove any grease

  • Put all food in storage safe containers

  • Vacuum and mop regularly

2. Clear Out Clutter

This is our #1 tip for any pest issue. Clutter can provide hiding places for any pests, including roaches. Keep your home in tip-top shape and avoid any paper or cardboard clutter buildup. By doing this, you are making sure roaches have nowhere to hide.

3. Seal Any Cracks or Crevices in Cabinetry.

Cockroaches like to hide in the cracks in your cabinets. I mean, that’s like prime real estate if you think about it. Small hidden place next to all of your glorious food? With that being said, we highly recommend going through with caulking and seal all cracks and crevices.

Pro Tip: Don’t squish the roaches! If you squish a female roach, you run the risk of spreading eggs after said squishing.

When all else fails, call a professional. Cockroaches are persistent and difficult to get rid of by yourself. It’s not you, it’s them. Let us help you get rid of these nasty critters.
